How to do justice for immigrant neighbors

Are you tired of demeaning rhetoric?  Upset over the treatment of immigrant and refugee neighbors?  Passionate about justice but don’t know how to offer practical assistance?  We want to help.  Let us show you how to do justice for immigrant neighbors.

Alleviate fear for immigrant neighbors

One of the best ways to demonstrate loving concern for immigrant neighbors is to alleviate fear.  You can do that with a Family Safety Plan.  We want to provide you with the most comprehensive plan available at Restore 117.  Restore 117 is our annual conference.  Check out the site –

Serve immigrant neighbors with love and peace

We believe God loves all people regardless of their status.  At least 28 times in the Bible, Jesus encourages his followers with the words, “Do not be afraid.”

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.  Jn. 14:27

We know the future can be frightening.  While our country is greatly divided over the presence of individuals without lawful status, we believe Jesus welcomes the stranger.  We believe He provides peace in the midst of a broken world.  Because we follow Him, we want to share that peace.

Our belief is that God created all people in His image.  He has a purpose for every life and that purpose is to have a relationship with Him and know that He desires to prosper and not harm them.  He wants to provide hope and a future.  Jer. 29:11.

Serve immigrant neighbors recognizing we are ALL law breakers

Everyone has broken the law, especially God’s law.  We call that sin.  But God so loved us that He became an immigrant.  He left his home in Heaven to come to Earth to die for us.  Heaven’s immigration policy is wonderful.  You just need to believe Jesus is God’s son who willingly died to pay for your penalty, your sin.   And God welcomes you to His kingdom where every tribe, tongue and nation is present. Rev. 5:9  And because God welcomes the stranger or foreigner, so do we.

I met this week with a woman who had strong concerns over the illegal conduct of immigrants.  I understand.  The rule of law matters.  Obeying authorities matters. But is the breaking up of families, possibly creating wards of the state, an appropriate response to a Visa overstay or border crossing?   Policy challenges abound, but as Christ Followers our policy is the Bible and that always puts people ahead of politics.

Offer Practical Help to Immigrant Neighbors

Can I share something that really bothers me?  All talk.  No walk.

I have friends on both the right and left who spend a lot of time talking.  I believe actions speak louder than words.  You can pick apart anything I say, but it is difficult to challenge what I do.  We are called to be ‘doers of the Word.’  Jms. 1:22

If you agree with me then I urge you to attend Restore 117 which is a do justice conference.  You will walk away with a lot of resources to offer practical help.  Our Family Safety Plan for Immigrant Neighbors is one good example.

Help Assess Areas of Need

Our Family Safety Plan begins with 15 questions for a self-assessment.  The plan offers powerful practical advice to protect families.  Honestly the advice is sound regardless of whether ICE agents ever seek to separate families or not.

Some questions help determine whether a change in status is possible through VAWA, U-Visa, T-Visa or other.  Some questions determine whether one’s relationship status impacts ownership of homes, vehicles and bank accounts.  Common law marriage is common in some countries but not the United States.  Other questions involve businesses that many immigrants run.  Others involve the workplace, the home and school.

In each and every instance there is practical guidance on what to do and how to find help.  From avoidance of notarios and scam artist, to resource listings and 800 numbers of reputable help.  From gathering important information to creating list for numbers, passwords and people.  This is quite simply the most comprehensive resource available.  The resource also includes an outline for holding a one hour community seminar.  This is a powerful way to serve your community.

Understand other ways to help and involve others in serving immigrant neighbors

I highly recommend Restore 117.  Main stage speakers Noel Castellanos, Matt Soerens, and myself have extensive experience in writing, speaking and doing justice work in this area.  One workshop on immigration demonstrates how teens and young adults can get engaged.  You don’t have to be a dinosaur like me to do justice.

Restore 117 is the equipping conference so you can live your passion by doing justice.  God gave you that passion.  He longs to see His Kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Mt. 6:10  But his word commands action – “Believe”, “Restore”, “Love”, “Do”.

In a world of fear, let’s bring hope.  Join me at Restore 117 and let’s do justice together.

About Bruce Strom

I am a lawyer, pastor, CEO, and author of Gospel Justice who builds communities of justice minded Christians to free people from legal burdens so they can flourish. I didn’t always care about justice. I was busy as the senior partner of a successful multi-office law practice. But I missed something. God was less concerned about me building my kingdom and more concerned about how I was advancing His kingdom. I left private practice to start Administer Justice to serve the least of these with their legal needs. Over 20 years later, churches, lawyers, and individuals across the country are joining a movement to Administer Justice for those in need.
